Yüzüncü Yıl Üniversitesi, 20 Temmuz 1982 tarih ve 41 sayılı kanun hükmünde kararname ile kurulmuştur. Üniversite Van Gölü'nün kuzey kıyısında ve Erciş yolu 15. km'de yerleşmiştir. 30.000 civarı öğrencisi bulunan Üniversite 23 Ekim 2011 tarihinde yaşanan büyük Van Depremi nden dolayı eğitime bir süre ara vermiştir.
